Defining The Meaning of Custom Tied Flies

If you are looking for mass produced tied flies then you have probably landed on the wrong website.  Pro Flies Unlimited, LLC is a pure custom fly tying on-line wholesale and retail shop.  What does the word “custom” really mean when I refer it to fly tying?  I define it as tying flies in a particular, yet specific, and defined way. Tying a specific pattern, for a specific fish species. Relating it to a type of fly fishing technique, and for a particular persons needs. 

Today there are many fly tiers sitting at their bench tying something that resembles really nothing.  What I mean by that is many fly tiers have fallen into a culture of tying the same pattern fifty ways.  Or, tying a fly with various fur, feathers, hackles and some sparkle or a lot of flash in order to create a new fly pattern and hoping it will be a consistent fish producer.  Just visit YouTube.  There are probably more than twenty ways to tie a pheasant tail nymph.  Now you can see where I am going. But, I do understand it.

So, if you truly want your fly patterns custom tied for you and only you then you have come to the right place.  Below are my criteria for custom tied fly patterns.

1. Species of fish.  Trout, Salmon, Steelhead, Stripers, Tarpon, Permit, Bonefish etc.
2. What part of the country will you be fishing.  Northeast, Southeast, Midwest, Great Lakes, Rocky Mountain Region, West Coast Region, British Columbia, Iceland, Patagonia, etc.
3. Type of water you will be fishing.  Rivers, streams, lakes, bays, ocean etc.
4. Time of year.  Fall, winter, spring, summer.
5. Fishing platform.  Wading, floating, raft or boat.
6. Any other criteria that is relevant.
